What is Gum Disease?

Plaque and bacteria gathering near the gumline

At its heart, gum disease is an infection of the gums – the pink tissues around your teeth. The condition often stems from plaque that builds up from poor eating and bad oral hygiene. However, certain factors – genetics, hormones, etc. – can make it more or less likely to occur.

Gum disease has two main stages: gingivitis and periodontitis. The first refers to a slight gum inflammation that’s often irritating but usually minor. On the other hand, the second stage – periodontitis – is a full-blown infection that attacks the gums and jaw. Gingivitis is reversible with good oral care, but periodontitis can only be managed at best.

Symptoms of Gum Disease

Because it has two stages, gum disease can cause a wide range of symptoms. Which signs you show will depend on your condition’s severity, progress rate, etc.

As an example, consider gingivitis. This early form of gum disease shows signs like:

  • Chronic bad breath
  • Gum tenderness
  • Swollen gums
  • Red, bleeding gums
  • Gum recession

Symptoms of periodontitis tend to be more severe, as they include the following:

  • Chewing pain
  • Tooth sensitivity (often due to gum recession)
  • Loose permanent teeth
  • A shift in your bite
  • Changes in your restoration’s fit
  • Permanent tooth loss

How Do We Treat Gum Disease?

During your consultation, our dentists will conduct a close oral exam. Doing so lets us check your mouth and observe your gum disease, ensuring we get crucial details. We’ll then use our findings to suggest one (or more) of the following treatment options:

Scaling & Root Planing

The go-to treatment for gum disease is scaling and root planing, which acts as a “deep cleaning” of the areas around your gums. Scaling removes the harmful plaque above and below your gum line, while root planing smooths your tooth roots. These two steps work together to remove the infecting bacteria and ensure your gums reattach healthily. Depending on your condition, they can also be done at a few separate appointments.

Antibiotic Treatment

If scaling and root planing aren’t enough, we may suggest you get an antibiotic treatment. This service applies Arestin® – a special antibiotic – to your infection site to remove its infecting bacteria. A few weeks after the application, the medicine should make your gums much healthier and stronger. The final result would be a more vibrant smile that avoids the need for invasive surgeries.
